Changing
After the warmth of the womb newborns don’t tend to like the cold, so undressing for a nappy change can be upsetting for them. Lay them on a changing mat and keep your movements quick and smooth as you remove their clothes – talk to them in a soothing voice throughout. Your baby’s delicate skin can react to irritating chemicals in urine and faeces, so when you’ve removed their nappy, gently clean their bottom with either moistened cotton wool, a clean cloth dipped in warm water or a wipe that’s kind to baby’s sensitive skin and be sure to gently pat their skin dry with a towel. Whenever possible, air their delicate skin before applying nappy cream and putting on a clean nappy.
Feeding
Newborn babies tend to feed every four hours, so this is likely to be the next priority in your baby routine. Whether you choose to breastfeed or bottle feed is a personal decision for every mum. Whichever you choose, feeding is an important time for bonding and connecting between mother and baby. Breastfeeding offers you the added advantage of being available when needed. If you’re bottle feeding, prepare the bottles the night before to help make night feeds and early mornings easier. You’re unlikely to have a strict feeding schedule at this stage, so watch out for your baby’s cues to recognise when they’re hungry.
Moisturise
A newborn baby’s skin is 20% thinner, more delicate and requires more care than an adult’s. This fragile nature makes their skin more susceptible to dryness. Morning is a great time to check your baby’s dry skin and apply cream to help soothe it. Gently massage Oilatum Soothe & Protect Junior Moisturising Lotion into their face, arms, legs, feet and hands paying particular attention to their skin folds. Talk softly, hum or sing while you are massaging, as this can make it more reassuring and calming for your baby.
Dressing
Dress your newborn in a clean vest and
sleepsuit and add an extra layer such as a
jumper or blanket if they need it. Help
prevent dry, itchy, irritated skin symptoms
by washing any new clothes before your baby
wears them using a non-bio detergent and
fabric softener.
Now your baby is fed, changed and calm, you
should both be relaxed and looking forward
to the day ahead.
